Why we keep play groups to small and medium dogs

Short answer: grouping dogs by size keeps play fair. When every dog in the group is roughly the same size, a playful bump can’t become an injury, shy dogs are more willing to join in, and staff can let dogs play naturally instead of constantly separating them. At emBARK in Port Moody, every dog is small or medium, generally 35 lb and under.

Size changes how dogs play

Dogs play by chasing, wrestling, body-slamming and mouthing. Between two dogs of similar size, that’s healthy and self-regulating. Between a 10 lb Shih Tzu and a 75 lb retriever, the same game is lopsided: the big dog doesn’t have to mean any harm for a paw on the back or a shoulder check to hurt.

Small dogs also tend to be more cautious around big ones, and a dog who feels outmatched may freeze, hide or snap. Put them with friends their own size and many of those same dogs relax and play.

Who does best in a small and medium dog group

  • Toy and small breeds: Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Maltese, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Frenchies, Dachshunds and similar.
  • Shy or timid dogs who need confidence before they’ll join a group. One of our clients described her puppy going “from a shy, timid puppy to a social butterfly.”
  • Puppies of small breeds, once they’ve finished their vaccinations.
  • Seniors who still enjoy company but can’t handle rough play.
  • Medium dogs with a gentle play style who are under the 35 lb guideline.

What else to look for in a daycare

Size grouping is one piece. When you visit any daycare, ask:

  1. Is there an assessment? A good daycare meets your dog first. Ours is free.
  2. Who supervises, and are they trained? Our pack leaders are certified in Dog First Aid and watch every play group.
  3. Is there somewhere quiet? Not every dog wants to play all day. We have a private rest space for introverts.
  4. How is the day structured? Play, lunch, naps and potty breaks on a routine keep dogs calm. See a day at emBARK.
  5. How clean is it? We clean and sanitize daily with dog-safe products.

Is our daycare right for your dog?

If your dog is under 35 lb and enjoys (or is learning to enjoy) other dogs, it’s worth a try. Every new dog starts with a free assessment, and we’ll tell you honestly how it went.
